I Heart Faces Photo Challenge – On Your Feet!

This is a picture of my baby girl Hailey's feet, at two weeks old. If you look very carefully, you can see the scars on her heel from the multiple heel pricks she received. She had very bad jaundice, and once a day they had to prick her heel and test her bilirubin levels. When she was five days old, on Christmas Eve, they decided it was too high, and we spent the night in the hospital. (It was a very sad long lonely night, but that is a different story). On that night, every three hours, she received a new heel prick. They let us out on Christmas morning so that we could spend the holiday with family, but she had to be tested over the next week to make sure her levels were going down.

For the first two weeks of her life, my brand new baby girl got stabbed in the heel at least once a day, every day. She still has those scars. When most people look at this picture, they see baby feet. I see memories of worrying about my baby and being grateful when it was all finally over and she was healthy.
